How to Make a Kite
Gwenllian views kites as sculptures of the sky, as well as storytellers of the open air. They exist beyond the confines of a gallery space, giving anyone the opportunity to interpret them as they will, weaving their own stories as the kite weaves in the wind.
Kite-making is a reflection on your surroundings; it’s a contemplative activity that engages with your landscape in a distinct way. Throughout these current periods of isolation, kite-making is a continuous link with the outside world, whilst kite-flying instigates a relationship between you and the open sky. About Gwenllian
Gwenllian is an artist whose work is predominantly rooted in the Welsh landscape where she grew up. Her practice (often site-specific) travels across landscapes; earlier this year she was an artist-in-residence with Kinono Art Gathering in Greece (2020), while most recently she was working on a commission for the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust (2020).
Gwenllian graduated from BA Fine Art Drawing at Camberwell College of Arts in 2018. Recent exhibitions include: Adlais Hynafol, Ancient Echoes, Camberwell Space, London (2019); The Westmorland Landscape Prize, Rheged Centre, Penrith (2019); UK Young Artist City Takeover, Surface Gallery, Nottingham (2019); Elephant x Griffin Art Prize (shortlisted), Elephant Gallery, London (2018). She is the recipient of the Vanguard Court Studio Award (2018-2019) and is a previous recipient of the Young Artist Scholarship awarded by Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru (2015) which she used to fund the Summer Workshop Programme with MI-LAB Artist-in-Residence in Tokyo, Japan (2016). Earlier this year she was an artist-in-residence with Kinono Art Gathering on Tinos Island, Greece (2020) and was most recently working on a commission for the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust (2020).
